Steven Gerrard will miss the upcoming England qualifiers and possibly some of Liverpool’s pre-season after it was announced by the club that the team captain could require shoulder surgery.

In an interview with the club’s official website today, first team coach Mike Marsh said, “It’s looking more and more likely that he might require surgery.” Gerrard has been ever present for the Reds this season, playing every minute of their Premier League campaign so far.

Marsh revealed that the midfielder has been suffering from the problem for a while. “He has been playing with a shoulder injury for quite a while now. If it gets to the stage where he gets any worse, we’ll try to find the right time for him to get it fixed properly,” he said.

The injury could hardly have come at a worse time for Gerrard, with the possible time needed to recover from the surgery going beyond the start of next season. “It’s not ideal timing, it’s going to take quite a while for him to heal. It’s a funny injury – it’s pretty similar to Joe Allen,” Marsh said. “If it needs repairing, it needs repairing and when he’s back fit, he’s back fit. There’s not much we can do about it,” he added.

Despite bad news coming to Liverpool fans in the form of the Gerrard injury and the ban for Luis Suarez, Marsh had some good news for them on the injury front. Fabio Borini revealed on Twitter earlier in the week that he had joined in with full training after recovering from his dislocated shoulder, with Marsh saying, “Fabio Borini has joined in, Raheem Sterling is now back out on the pitch and Martin Kelly is also outside. We’re back to almost a full complement.”

The coach also revealed that Borini could be on the bench as early as this weekend against Newcastle United.
