Liverpool edged out Aston Villa at Villa Park after a first half goal of the highest quality from Daniel Sturridge was enough to decide the game. Aston Villa fought back valiantly in the second half and Liverpool’s new goalkeeper Simon Mignolet made two good saves, thwarting fellow Belgian Christian Benteke, to help Liverpool continue their winning start to the season. It was the first time Liverpool have won both opening games since 2008/09 and they have now won their last three Premier League games 1-0 and are on a four game winning streak going into next week’s game Vs Manchester United.
For Aston Villa, who now play again in the Premier League in three weeks time, the 3 points achieved from their tough opening games is what Paul Lambert said he would have been happy with. There’s a lot to be positive about if you’re an Aston Villa fan and a repeat of last season’s struggles looks unlikely.
