The Mirror are reporting that Arsene Wenger is chasing German sensation Julian Draxler as his next piece of the jigsaw at the Emirates stadium.
Apparently Wenger sees Schalke’s attacking midfielder as a striker and believes he will repeat the conversion that Robin van Persie undertook when joining from Feyenoord. Whilst one should not doubt a man of such intelligence and stature in the game you have to look at the stats and see whether this would be possible for Draxler. In the current attacking midfielder role Draxler has only scored one and assisted four goals this season, however he did score ten goals last season from this position so there could be potential in this 20 year old.
Will the Gunners be willing to match the £35m asking price? What they do know is that introducing Mesut Ozil at the end of the transfer window provided a boost for the rest of the squad and you can see the effect – Arsenal are top of the league.
For Draxler to become the new Van Persie he’ll have to break some goal-scoring records but what is clear for Arsenal’s squad is that the Gunners require some more fire power to assist Giroud so that the pressure isn’t solely upon the Frenchman as it is at the moment. Julian Draxler (video below) would certainly send out another message to the rest of the Premier League – that Arsenal aren’t planning a short stay at the top – they’re planning to stay there!
