According to the Telegraph Bacary Sagna is due to hold fresh talks with Arsenal over a new contract although they do state that the negotiations could drag on until the summer. Sagna has been a key player in Arsenal’s quest to remain at the top of the Premier League with them being light in reserve at the right back position.
Sagna, in his 7th season with the Gunners, has played 1530 minutes (17 starts) for Arsenal this season and been involved in 7 clean sheets in the Premier League. With no defensive errors registered on our Opta Stats Centre Sagna has improved upon his performance from last season where committed four errors averaging to one every 560 mins. Playing next to the best centre-back pairing in the league, Koscielny & Mertesacker, has aided Sagna’s performance but he does deserve credit for continuing to play at a high level when his future isn’t certain with the club.
It is believed that Sagna would like to be appreciated for his loyalty with a better salary however you’d have to understand the stance of Arsenal with the Frenchman turning 31 next month and football club’s are becoming smarter when negotiating older player contracts. Liverpool have a similar issue with Glen Johnson where the player is nearing the end of his contract but the Reds refuse to budge on a similar contract.
Whatever happens you’d have to back Arsenal to find another excellent right back as their stock will be very high at the moment. In the Champions League knock out stages and at the top of the Premier League is certainly an impressive showing so far from the Gunners.
