Arsenal took advantage of Chelsea’s slip up against Aston Villa on Saturday and won the North London Derby in a double whammy on Sunday. The game was won early in the game with a Tomas Rosicky wonder strike.
As you can see from the stats below Tottenham dominated the game in all aspects. More than double the passes in the final third, a better accuracy in the final third, domination of ball possession, five attempts inside the box to Arsenal’s three however it was the shots on target that cost Tottenham the game. They only managed two from their seventeen shots whilst Arsenal had three from their seven. Take a look at the clearances stats right at the bottom of the graphic below to see how much Arsenal were under pressure in the game – a telling stat.
Arsenal were missing some major players in Ozil & Walcott and they lacked pace up top (even though Oxlade-Chamberlain had a one-on-one from midfield) and they missed their class whilst attacking but still managed to scrape the win.
Tottenham were unlucky and one of the scrambles in the box could have ended in the net on another day and they were definitely worth, at least, a point against their North London rivals. This loss could mark the end of their chances for a top four finish with them now being seven points behind Manchester City but the Citizens have three games in hand!
Arsenal now move onto a tie against league leaders Chelsea next weekend with the aim on trying to take points off of them. If Arsenal can manage to return to the Emirates with some points they’ll be even more confident about the remainder of the season. With a FA Cup semi-final on the horizon and no major teams left in the competition Arsenal could still have their fairy-tale end to the season so there is so much to play for in the next few months.
