Wigan vs Bolton | Match Report

Three points on the board and I was able to watch match of the day without skipping the Bolton match is always good. The short trip to the DW stadium was one of hope and positive feeling that we would get the result we so badly needed. Good away support from the Bolton faithful all in loud voice spurring on the wanderers.

The game didn’t take too long to spring into life with a good early goal from Nigel Reo-Coker to settle the nerves. Eagles started where he meant to carry on getting down the wing and firing in cross to the near post where a combination of Reo-Coker and Caldwell diverted the ball into the Wigan net.

Wigan began to press in search of an equaliser and found one after the ball found its way to Diame who then fired a swerving effort in the back of the net leaving Jaaskalinen with no chance. Then Wigan pressed the self-destruct button with half time fast approaching. Davies nicked the ball from Gohouri, found N’gog who had time to run in the 18 yard box before finding the back of the net.

The second half was a lot more even (if you ignore some match reports) Wigan pressed without any real cutting edge. Bolton had the chances to make it 3-1 with Boyata missing a close range header. Then Davies missed a penalty. Easily the worse penalty I’ve seen for a long time with, a tame limp effort from the captain.  At this point I thought I would come to haunt us as normally so often does in football. The nerves started to kick in, we needed this win, we must hold on. Then Klasnic, on as a second half sub found Eagles who ran at the Wigan defence turned in the box and curled it past Al-Habsi to make it 3-1. I could relax at last.

Bolton didn’t play out of their skin, they weren’t the best team they quite simply weren’t the worst team. That prize goes to Wigan who gifted Bolton two of the goals with shocking defending. Apart from the goal they lacked the cutting edge that Bolton had. Eagles had his best match in a Bolton shirt and Wheater threw himself at everything. Petrov is still way under par and the goal we conceded was a result of him losing the ball on the wing and not tracking back, putting the effort it.

In all thoroughly pleased with the result and the bragging rights to boot. One win and we shoot up the table all the woes behind us. Still under pressure but feeling a whole lot happier with a win under the belt, Also good to see Chung-Yong Lee making progress on his road back to fitness.
