Five World Cup 2014 Stars That Could Interest Premier League Clubs

The World Cup has attracted the attention of the entire footballing world in recent weeks and hasn’t disappointed in terms of quality and tension. A lot of players have seen their reputations enhanced during the tournament, which will no doubt see interest in them increase over the next couple of months as Premier League clubs seek to add quality into their squad. It’s a well known fact in football that some clubs are influenced to buy players off the back of tournaments. There have been both good and bad examples of players moving on the back of a big tournament, but it will always happen. Liverpool fans will remember the signings of El-Hadji Diouf and Salif Diao as failures after they promised big things during the 2002 World Cup, while Stephane Guivarch was believed to have played a huge role in France’s 1998 World Cup win, but he proved to be a flop at Newcastle.

Guillermo Ochoa

The Mexican goalkeeper will not be short of interest this summer after playing so well in Brazil. He is currently a free agent after his contract at Ajaccio expired, therefore he will prove to be a cheap signing for any Premier League club needing a new goalkeeper. The press have linked him with a move to either Liverpool or Arsenal, but it is unknown whether Ochoa will be interested in a move to a club where he will only be a substitute. However if a side like Southampton, who need a top class goalkeeper, offered him a contract, he could very well be tempted to come to England. He is an excellent shot stopper as he showed against Brazil and would be a good buy for a top half club.

Daley Blind

Holland were not given much of a chance before the tournament, but they have shown themselves to be a very decent side. Their defence was supposed to be the weak link, yet they have performed well at the back. Their left back, Daley Blind, has had an excellent tournament, getting three assists in the process. He has a lovely left foot, which is capable of putting in sumptuous deliveries for the attackers, as was evident with his ball to Robin Van Persie for his excellent headed goal against Spain. He could be a player targeted by the likes of Tottenham and Everton, who may see his technical ability as a welcome addition to their sides. He was linked with Manchester United, but the arrival of Luke Shaw makes that move unlikely.

Enner Valencia

Although Ecuador didn’t make it to the knockout stages, their striker Enner Valencia impressed in the group stages, netting three times. He showed himself to be clinical in front of goal. He also scored against England in a pre tournament friendly, which suggests he could be a good signing for an English side. The forward is very strong, and is built in such a way that he could thrive in the English game, while he is clever in the final third, as he often times his runs well as showed by the equaliser against Honduras. Although he has yet to test himself in Europe, he has a decent scoring record of 18 in 23 for Pachuca in Mexico. A host of clubs such as West Ham and Sunderland could benefit from signing the forward as a goalscorer can be the difference between relegation and mid table.

Serge Aurier

The Ivory Coast has had several players that have come to England and been a success, so it is no surprise that right back Serge Aurier is a player being looked at by a few English clubs. Like Daley Blind, he has shown in Brazil that he is a very good crosser of the ball, making two assists in the group stage. He had an excellent season with Toulouse scoring six goals and getting six assists. He can also play centre back, or further up the right wing. His versatility could make him an attractive signing for several top half Premier League clubs. Arsenal and Liverpool could both do with a better player at right back, while Newcastle could be inetrested if Mathieu Debuchy leaves this summer.

Arturo Vidal

Although his tournament was slightly hindered by a knee injury, Arturo Vidal still proved to be a key player for Chile and showed his undoubted quality as his national side impressed. He is a box to box midfielder, who is clinical in front of goal when chances come his way. He scored 18 goals in all competitions for Juventus, while he also grabbed five assists. His physicality in the middle of the park will make him perfect for the Premier League as big clubs such as Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United consider the Chilean as a target. He has become a world class player at Juventus, and although he would cost a lot of money, he would be a great addition for one of the top clubs in England.
