Would Cambiasso be a Good Signing For Leicester?

Leicester will face a difficult task this season to consolidate their position in the top flight, especially after being absent from the Premier League for such a long time, but an opening day 2-2 draw against Everton was very encouraging. They have yet to add proven Premier League quality. Although Marc Albrighton and Matt Upson have both played at this level, neither will provide the quality needed to survive. Whilst Leonard Ulloa is unproven at the top level he started well after netting on his debut. In the remaining weeks of the window, they will need to buy some proven quality and experience in the correct areas; the Esteban Cambiasso rumour is exciting for Leicester fans.

The Argentine may be 34 years old, but he still has plenty of quality that will make him a coup for Leicester. He has played for massive clubs in River Plate, Real Madrid and Inter Milan, which will provide him with experience and he will be an excellent player to have in the dressing room for the younger players to learn from. In his position of defensive midfield, players can excel into the latter years, due to the lack of need for pace, but Cambiasso’s reading of the game and passing ability will mean he could still influence games in the Premier League.

He is seen as one of the best players in Inter Milan’s history after being the heartbeat of the side that won the treble under Jose Mourinho. Anybody who becomes a key part of a Mourinho side must have the correct mental state as well as technical ability, which suggests Cambiasso would be professional if he does join newly promoted Leicester and not see it as a final pay day as some ageing European stars would. Although he is mainly a ‘destroyer’ in the centre of the park, his game can be quite attacking and he has the ability to weigh in with 3-5 goals a season. This sort of contribution from a midfielder could prove to be crucial for a side near the bottom of the table.

Leicester already have two talented central midfielders in the form of Danny Drinkwater and Matty James, who both came through the youth ranks at Manchester United. They could both develop into decent Premier League players, but the signing of Cambiasso or a similar player is important. He is already ready for the Premier League and the tough games that await Leicester, while he will also prove to have a positive effect on the other central midfielders as competition will increase, meaning players have to up their own games to secure a starting berth. Plus the likes of Drinkwater and James could learn lots from Cambiasso, who has been there and done nearly everything there is to in the game.

Their opening day performance was encouraging, but Leicester fans shouldn’t get over confident. The season is long and very competitive, however there is a natural order and Leicester will be fighting relegation. There are as many as ten teams who could get very realistically get relegated and another three who could if the season goes very badly. Leicester fans have a lot of reasons to be optimistic about surviving this season. It remains pivotal that they add two or three experienced players with quality to add to a youthful squad and to provide the team with know how. Esteban Cambiasso would be an excellent signing and one that would have a positive effect on the players and the fanbase.
