Cech, Mate: Is This the End?

Having sat out Chelsea’s 3-1 victory over newly promoted Burnely on Monday night, rumours as to whether Petr Cech is finally on his way out of the Chelsea team having spent the best part of a decade as Chelsea number one. Thibaut Courtois started the game having spent the previous three seasons on loan at Atletico Madrid, resulting in a La Liga winner’s medal and a runner up finish in last season’s Champions League. The young Belgian said:

“I came here obviously to play. I know that Petr is a great goalkeeper so there is a lot of competition but, when you come back from a successful loan, you hope to play. Otherwise it would maybe have been better for me to go to another team.”

Mourinho bought Cech back in 2004/05, and has been a regular under every manager at Stamford Bridge in that period. While he is not the keeper he once was, there is still undoubted quality in his ability, and while his Chelsea career may be over there will be a host of clubs who would be interested in his services should he wish to quit the London club.
