Manchester City could not have picked better opponents than West Brom to rediscover their touch in front of goal on Saturday.
Manuel Pellegrini’s side may have suffered a setback in their bid for the Premier League trophy last weekend with their 1-0 loss at lowly Burnley, but history points to City reviving their title chase against West Brom.
In each of the clubs’ last three meetings City have scored three goals, winning 3-1 at the Hawthorns on Boxing Day, 3-1 in the corresponding fixture last April and 3-2 at the Hawthorns in December 2013.
Tony Pulis may have revived the Baggies’ fortunes at home since his appointment as manager in January with four successive victories, but away from the Hawthorns it has been a different story, with their last League win on the road coming way back in November.
Furthermore, they will now be without England goalkeeper Ben Foster for a month, after he damaged knee ligaments in last weekend’s 1-0 home win over Stoke.
Pulis has admitted that Foster’s absence will be a blow, as he has been so consistent recently, keeping seven clean sheets in 10 games.
The City strikeforce will undoubtedly be chomping at the bit to test Foster’s replacement, Boaz Myhill, and ensure that they turn the type of possession advantage they have been enjoying of late in League games – it was over 70 per cent against Burnley – into plenty of goals.
