If it’s goals you want to see on Saturday, then the Emirates looks like the place to be, judging by recent encounters between Arsenal and Liverpool.
Four of their last five meetings have produced three goals or more and all of the last three have, namely Liverpool’s 5-1 home Premier League hammering of the Gunners last season, Arsenal’s 2-1 FA Cup success at the Emirates last February and the 2-2 draw at Anfield earlier this term.
Furthermore, in seven of Arsenal’s last eight games there have been three or more goals as they have climbed into third place, one point behind Manchester City, on the back of a stunning run of nine wins in 10 matches.
France striker Olivier Giroud has played a large part in that sequence with 10 goals in 12 matches and he is set to resume his burgeoning partnership up front with Danny Welbeck, who is expected to recover from the knee injury that forced him to miss England’s midweek friendly in Italy.
Likewise, Liverpool forward Raheem Sterling is set to shake off the toe injury that ruled him out of the game in Turin and boost the Merseyside club after their 2-1 home loss to Manchester United in their last Premier League game.
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is also hoping that Daniel Sturridge, another of his strikers, will be available, after a hip injury sidelined him for England’s Euro 2016 qualifier against Lithuania and the friendly with Italy.
The inclusion of Sterling and Sturridge would significantly enhance Liverpool’s chances of making up the five-point lead United have over them in the battle for Champions League places and of contributing to an Emirates goal feast.
