One of the main reasons Chelsea appear to be marching towards the Premier League title is the contribution from midfield of Spanish international Cesc Fabregas.
The 27-year-old made an immediate impact when he returned to the EPL this season from Barcelona, notching 12 assists in his first 16 matches.
That tally has tailed off in the second half of the campaign as defences have become more accustomed to him, but he is still on target to break the record of 20 set by former Arsenal team-mate Thierry Henry in 2002-3 and matched by Fabregas himself in the Gunners’ 2007-8 season.
His current tally is 18, which was boosted by his assist for Diego Costa’s goal in Chelsea’s last Premier League match – a 3-2 win over struggling Hull.
That was the Spaniard’s first in the league since January, but he can continue his bid for the EPL assist record against Stoke, who have already suffered at Fabregas’ feet this season.
In the clubs’ first encounter – in December – he created the Blues’ first goal for John Terry in a 2-0 win and then found the net himself to round off a -man-of-the-match display.
Expect the Spaniard to be a lively presence again in front of the Sky cameras on Saturday as Chelsea, six points clear of second-placed Manchester City, attempt to take another firm stride towards the title.
Judging by their last result, a 2-1 home loss to Crystal Palace, Stoke’s players already seem to have their minds on their summer holidays.
That was their second consecutive defeat and dropped them to 10th place, and they have lost on their last five visits to Stamford Bridge.
