In recent days, Memphis Depay has been heavily linked with Manchester United. The attacker made a name for himself in the summer as he became Holland’s youngest goalscorer at the World Cup. Many expected him to move on last summer, but he opted to stay in the Eredivisie which proved to be an excellent decision as his reputation continues to increase in the football world. He has played a huge role in PSV Eindhoven regaining the league title for the first time since 2008 and now could be the right time to leave for the Premier League.
There won’t be a shortage of interest in the winger this summer as clubs from across Europe will be looking at Depay with genuine interest. The Premier League will be appealing for the Dutchman due to the standing of the league and the recent successes of players moving from the Eredivisie to England. He will look at the likes of Dusan Tadic, Graziano Pelle, Wilfried Bony and Daryl Janmaat with hopes that he could make a similar impact. He has been arguably the best player in the Dutch league this season and he will want to test himself in a better division, with continental football also on his agenda.
Louis van Gaal is a manager who Depay will want to work with again after their successful relationship with the Dutch national side. For a player at Depay’s age, picking the right move for their future development is crucial and Old Trafford could be the logical choice to make. Manchester United aren’t what they were a few seasons ago, and they are still very much in a rebuilding phase and will be looking for players to build their future around. David de Gea, Daley Blind, Luke Shaw and Ander Herrerra have emerged as the future of Manchester United this season and Memphis Depay could be the next name to add to that list.
This season, Depay has been clinical from the left wing, scoring twenty goals to date in the Eredivisie. Although he only has three assists, he has shown his ability to link up with Luuk de Jong, Luciano Narsingh and Georginio Wijnaldum in the PSV attack. Depay’s role this season has been to score goals and he has done that very well, emerging as the top scorer in the league as a result. Many will claim that scoring records in the Eredivisie can’t be taken seriously, but for a winger to be leading the goal charts in any league is impressive.
Depay likes to run with the ball and he tries to beat defenders which will excite fans in England. Manchester United used to be linked with out and out wingers and Depay would symbolise the return to that. He is a very good finisher inside the box, while he has also showed over his career that he is threatening from long range. Depay likes to cut inside when around the penalty box and shoot across goal, this has resulted in a lot of his goals this season. He can also take free kicks and can play through balls to onrunning team mates. If he moves to Manchester United, then he could emerge as a player with the potential of turning them back into challengers at the top of the league.
The news emerging out of Holland suggests that Depay is a priority target for Louis van Gaal this summer as he tries to add width to his side. Ashley Young has done well this season, but he lacks the quality in the final third that Depay has, and the Dutchman is only going to grow in years to come. The PSV wideman will attract a lot of interest this summer, and Manchester United are trying to steal a march on their potential rivals for his signature. He would be an excellent signing and add more attacking quality to the side which they have lacked this season at times.
