Is Arda Turan a good fit for the Premier League?

Arda Turan is set to leave Atletico Madrid this summer according to World Soccer Talk, with both himself and his agent commenting on his desire to leave the 2013/14 La Liga champions. The midfielder who is currently the most expensive Turkish player of all time is now 28 and in the peak of his career. He has achieved a lot in Spain with Atletico since joining the club in 2011 and he will have a desire to add to his achievements in a new league.

Turan is a hard working midfielder, who can contribute in both halves of the pitch. His defensive contributions have been crucial to the way Atletico play football under Diego Simeone, who demands 100% from all his players and Turan certainly played in the image of his manager. He also contributes in the attacking half with an impressive passing range and the ability to surge forward with the ball. The Turkish international is difficult to dispossess when he carries the ball forward and that has proved to be a key part of his game in recent seasons. His style will suit the Premier League as he is capable of battling hard and uses his physicality in both halves of the pitch.

The midfielder isn’t relied upon to contribute in the final third, but last season he scored twice in the league and got four assists which shows that he will chip in throughout the season. He has been a key player for Atletico Madrid and will be a huge loss, but he will also be a great signing for a club this summer.

His agent has talked about the interest in him being from ‘the best in England and in European football’ which suggests that he will be moving to one of the world’s premier forces in football. The English clubs are rumoured to be Chelsea and Manchester United, with the latter, in my opinion, needing the Turkish midfielder more as they desperately need more quality in the middle of the part and they have needed that for the last decade. Turan would add a hard working, more defensive option in the Manchester United squad and would allow the likes of Ander Herrera, Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata to focus on creating chances. Both Micheal Carrick and Daley Blind have been used in a defensive role, but Turan is more naturally defensive and can also be a driving force, which United don’t currently have.

Although Chelsea are interested in the midfielder, they don’t need him having already got Nemanja Matic and Cesc Fabregas as their first choice pairing in the middle of the park. Jose Mourinho is creating a very strong and deep squad with plenty of options at Stamford Bridge and signing Turan would be a great signing, but the Turk is far from guaranteed a place in the starting eleven.

Atletico Madrid have had domestic and continental success in the period Turan has been at the club with the midfielder being a major part of that. He is versatile and is a major force in either half of the pitch. He will be a great signing for any side in world football and with his peak years ahead of him, he could develop into one of the best players in the game. Manchester United would be the best option for him as they need a player like him and the club are currently going through a resurgence under Louis van Gaal. The next few weeks will tell us a lot about Turan’s destination, but it’s clear that he wants to come to England and he would suit the league.
