What else do Chelsea need in this Window?

Chelsea were champions last season and ran away with the league title due to the excellent business they did in the previous summer. The decision to bring in Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas was instrumental in Jose Mourinho’s side lifting the Premier League trophy in May. This summer, they have already added Asmir Begovic and Radamal Falcao to add competition in the squad, but they must do more before the window closes. Manchester City have made the mistake in the summer of 2012 and 2014 of not building when they are in a position of strength as champions, Chelsea can’t make the same error this summer.

Their defence is known for it’s strength, but it lacks competition. The signing of another centre-back and a left-back would increase competition and ensure the club doesn’t suffer due to injuries. The links to both John Stones and Abdul Baba in recent days are promising as they are young and have lots of potential. The likes of John Terry, Gary Cahill and Branislav Ivanovic are getting older and may be more liable to injuries in the next few seasons.

Kurt Zouma is the long term answer to one of Chelsea’s centre half positions, and Stones could be the other. He is English and has impressed in his short time with Everton. Many see him as a future England captain and he could be the eventual replacement for John Terry for both club and country if Chelsea complete the deal. The club are set to increase their offer to £26m in the coming days, which would represent a huge investment and highlight Mourinho’s desire to bring down the average age of his squad. Stones himself is keen on the move according to some outlets. He is a modern day centre half, who likes to dribble with the ball and has an impressive passing range. It is obvious that he is going to be an excellent defender in years to come and he would be a great signing for Chelsea this summer.

After the departure of Felipe Luis back to Atletico, which was another brilliant piece of business from the Blues, Chelsea need some full-back cover and that could come in the form of Abdul Baba. The Augsburg left-back is one of the most exciting full-back talents in world football and at the age of 21, he could be another who is part of Mourinho’s long term plans. He is a strong tackler and is capable of winning the ball aerially. The Ghanaian is also quick, nimble and able to run with the ball, making him a complete modern day full-back. He is a much better fit for the new Chelsea than Luis, which is why the latter was sold back to Atletico.

Chelsea have a solid group of players to contest their central midfield roles next season. Nemanja Matic and Cesc Fabregas are likely to be the regular starters in central midfield, but Ramires, John Obi Mikel and Ruben Loftus-Cheek offer good competition in that area.

The Blues have some excellent creative players to contest their attacking midfield positions, but if Mo Salah and Juan Cuadrado leave in this window, they will have to bring in somebody to compete with Eden Hazard, Willian and Oscar.

The Chelsea squad is looking very strong and with another 2 or 3 additions, they will be well stocked in all areas, leaving them capable of challenging on all fronts. Jose Mourinho is building a new team at Chelsea with the likes of Didier Drogba, Frank Lampard and Petr Cech leaving the club, and this squad could surpass the achievements of the last.
