Tottenham need Kane alternative to get striker back to his best

It was expected that Harry Kane would return to Tottenham full of confidence after winning the Golden Boot at the World Cup. He was tipped by Bettingapps.co.uk to be the 18/19 Premier League top goal scorer at the start of the season, however, the England captain has looked out of sorts and lacked the dynamism that he has previously shown in a Spurs’ shirt. Although he has contributed five goals and one assist in eight Premier League matches, it hasn’t been a great start for the striker.

Last season, Kane averaged five shots per game in the Premier League. That is down to 3.3 shots per game this season. The rest of his underlying stats are similar, but the fact that he is attempting fewer shots on goal is a concern.

The reason why Kane has emerged as one of the best strikers in Europe is his ability to get the ball out of his feet and strike at goal. He isn’t afraid to miss a chance and that has allowed him to score a lot of goals since breaking into the Tottenham team.

The striker is very good at bursting past a defender to create space for himself to get a shot in. That has been missing from his game since the start of the season and it appears that he is still suffering from the injury that he picked up before the World Cup. Despite his heroics for England in front of goal, his overall contribution wasn’t what many were expecting from him.

There remain concerns about his fitness, with there being a potential for burnout. He is being looked after by England ahead of the two matches in the Nations League. It is important that Gareth Southgate and Mauricio Pochettino both manage him carefully, as it is obvious that he needs to be rested every now and again.

It is too soon to panic about Kane, as he continues to score regularly for Tottenham. However, his game does need to be closely monitored as he isn’t at his most effective at the time of writing.

One major reason for his fitness issues is the lack of depth in the Tottenham squad. Kane is the only quality striker that Pochettino has to call upon, which means that he plays nearly every match. Fernando Llorente can’t start regularly for a top four side, while Vincent Janssen hasn’t developed as the club would have liked.

For Kane to get back to his best, it is important that Tottenham find a way to play without him. This would give Pochettino the opportunity to rest him, thus keeping him at optimum fitness for the big games.
