Can Liverpool Win the Treble?

Liverpool’s 4-0 thrashing of Southampton before the winter break means they go down in history books as one of the few teams to have gone unbeaten for a year in the Premier League.

This streak dates back to 3 January 2019 when they lost 2-1 to defending champions Manchester City. This was Liverpool’s only defeat in the 2018/19 season that eventually cost them the title. Since then, Liverpool has gone on to play 42 games without a loss, while picking up 116 points.

The Reds are the third team to remain unbeaten in the premier league for a year. The others being Arsenal who went 49 games unbeaten during their 2003-04 invincible season, and Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea who went 40 games unbeaten between October 2004 and November 2005.

According to the premierleague.com, the Merseyside club has not only set the longest Club’s unbeaten record, but it is also breaking the records set by other greatest English teams of all time in its way to winning the league. Currently, they have the joint second-longest unbeaten streak behind Arsenal and time will tell if they can surpass the record.

While it may be early to mention, but Jürgen Klopp’s side is also well on track to achieve an invincible season (only achieved by Arsenal) with no mean feat.

In domestic games, the Reds have tasted defeat twice during that period. Their first loss was against Wolves in the FA Cup in January last year where they lost 2-1. They also lost 5 -2 when their team consisting of young players faced Aston Villa in December last year.

Liverpool have also lost in the Champions League where they were beaten by Spanish Giants Barcelona in their semi-final first leg but managed to win the tie on aggregate after thrashing the Spanish Champions in the reverse fixture. Napoli was also another team that managed to beat Liverpool in last year’s Champions League group stages.

Despite having a long unbeaten run, Jürgen Klopp’s side failed to win any domestic trophy in the last year. They were, however, more successful in international competitions where they became the first English side to win a treble. They are holders of the Champions League, Uefa Super Cup, and the Fifa Club World Cup.

Time for the Reds to Win the Treble?

The last year has been great for Liverpool but is it time for the Reds to replicate the form in the remaining games and win Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League titles this season?

The Reds are currently firmly on top of the Premier League with 73 points from 25 games. Manchester City comes a distant second with 51 points. While it is still mathematically possible for the defending champions to win the Premier League it is not an easy job to oust the rampant Reds from the top spot given the 22 points difference.

According to the Mirror, football has many surprises and history has shown that Liverpool is synonymous with letting huge point leads slip. However, this doesn’t seem like it. The current Liverpool side looks rejuvenated and hungry for their first league title in 24 years.

The odds are in favour of Liverpool lifting the trophy in May. With the huge point lead, bookmakers are favouring the reds to continue winning more points.

Liverpool are also doing well in the domestic competition. The reds booked a place in the fifth round of the FA Cup against their rivals Chelsea with 1-0 win over Shrewsbury on Tuesday night.

Jurgen Klopp trusted his young players and the Reds’ Kids proved they are ready to perform when called upon. According to BBC News, the youngest team in the Club’s history gave a good account of themselves with a sterling performance against Shrewsbury. This means that Liverpool will continue fighting on all three fronts and have a chance to win the treble.

Liverpool meets Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the FA fifth round. The two teams have already met twice this season, with Liverpool coming on top in the league and winning the Uefa Supercup on penalties after a one-all draw.

While the blues have not been registering good results at the Bridge, this fixture could go either way. According to Bookmakers, Chelsea is a slight favourite to win this one. So Chelsea could be another hurdle Liverpool will have to overcome to keep the dream of winning the treble alive.

The Reds Champions League Journey

In the Champions League, the Reds will face Atletico Madrid in less than a fortnight. Atletico Madrid is a strong team especially in knockout competitions having played in two out of the last six champions league finals. You can’t write off Liverpool too since they are defending champions. So this is going to be a difficult fixture for both teams.

According to The Telegraph, Manchester City are favourites to win the champions league while Liverpool are the Citizen’s main challengers for the Trophy. Most bookmakers are rooting for an all-England semi-final where they expect Liverpool to battle it out with City for a place in the Champions League final.

Predicting the Champions league outcome can be difficult since it is a knockout competition. However, with Liverpool’s current form they can beat any team, they play against and therefore stand a good chance of winning the competition. You can get the best odds of Liverpool lifting the trophy at 888sports (great review here) with the odds being 4/1.

Liverpool Have the Potential of Winning the Treble

The odds of Liverpool winning the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League have been reduced by bookmakers. With the Premier League race almost done, the FA Cup going to the fifth round and Champions league on the round of 16, winning the treble for Liverpool is becoming an achievable feat.

The team is currently winning everything with most players in the best form of their lives. And according to Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola, “Liverpool are the best team in Europe”. With such confidence, you can expect the Reds to continue winning matches and even trophies at the end of the season.
