Manchester City and their top targets to finally replace Vincent Kompany

Despite the signing of Nathan Ake, it is no secret that Manchester City remain in the market for another top-class centre-back. It appears that Ake will act as back-up for the injury-prone Aymeric Laporte on the left side of the back two as well as filling in at left-back when necessary. The club is still determined to find a long-term partner for Laporte on the right side and are seemingly prepared to spend big money to make it happen. We look at City’s top targets for the position and whether they can suitably replace their former captain and leader Vincent Kompany.

Kalidou Koulibaly

The 29-year old Napoli defender has been linked with the club throughout the summer. He would certainly cost a great deal of money with rumours suggesting Napoli won’t accept anything less than £80-million. Tension is persisting between the clubs after Napoli reneged on an agreement which had been in place for Jorginho before they allowed him to go to Chelsea instead. This is perhaps proving to be a sticking point with reported difficulties in communication between the two boards. Koulibaly would represent a statement of ambition with the club hoping he could have the same transformative effect on its defence as Virgil van Dijk has had upon Liverpool. His imperious presence and natural leadership could give Manchester City the ideal replacement for Vincent Kompany which they have craved since his departure.

Diego Carlos

Carlos won the Europa League with Sevilla in the past season and the 27-year old would bring some much-needed pace to Manchester City’s backline. City suffered greatly last season from goals conceded on the counter-attack and will feel it is necessary to remedy this; despite this, the club still stand at healthy 4/5 odds to regain the Premier League title this season with William Hill, which also has football-related games in its online casino including ‘Football Roulette’ which new users can use alongside the sign-up deposit bonuses through bonusfinder.

Question marks remain over the ability of the Brazilian defender to help City transform its defence because of his tendency for rash challenges. Indeed, Carlos gave away penalties in three consecutive Europa League games on their run to the final. However, his winning mentality would suggest he would potentially be a good fit for the club.

Jose Giminez

The Uruguayan defender has been an integral part of Atletico Madrid’s miserly defence for the past few seasons. He has, however, also been beset by injuries which may put City off from pursuing a permanent deal for the player. The club remembers the frustrations associated with Kompany’s myriad of muscular injuries which repeatedly forced him to miss key matches. Playing in a defence with a high-line may also prove to be difficult for the 25-year old as he is used to playing in the deep-lying system which Atletico employ. Regardless, links to the player persist and if he can avoid injury, he certainly represents an upgrade in quality on the likes of Nicolas Otamendi and John Stones.

Manchester City certainly appear set to spend big bucks on a new centre-back, with all three players being linked with moves in excess of £70 million. All come with risks attached, whether that’s an injury record or defensive flaws, but the club must be determined to address the biggest weakness in their supremely talented squad. City fans must be optimistic that a worthy replacement for their former captain Vincent Kompany can finally be found.
