Wigan Fail to Trouble Joe Hart in 1-0 Defeat

Edin Dzeko’s goal midway through the first half proved to be decisive as Manchester City restored their lead at the top of the Premier League to 3 points at the expense of bottom of the table Wigan Athletic.

Manchester City created a number of chances, forcing a number of saves from Ali Al-Habsi in their 1-0 victory on Monday.

Bosnian Edin Dzeko, who signed for Manchester City 12 months ago had the majority of chances in this game. 6 in total; 1 finding the net, 3 forcing saves from the Wigan goalkeeper with the remaining 2 failing to find the target. The former Wolfsburg striker should have scored a second in the 2nd half following a mazy, Ricky Villa-esque run in the box in which Dzeko stole the ball off his team mate with a very weak left-footed shot inside the 6 yard box that Al-Habsi got behind.

Sergio Aguero drew one save from the Omanian shot stopper and also rolled another wide following a great build up involving Dzeko and James Milner. The Argentinian created 2 chances for his team mate in this game, but it was another summer signing, Samir Nasri who was the most creative in the game.

The former Arsenal star set up 5 chances, all failed to be converted by his team mates. David Silva claimed the game’s only assist, with his free kick being headed in by Edin Dzeko.

Wigan saw a lot of possession in the second half (46% total), but could only create 4 attempts on goal throughout the whole game. Jordi Gomez had the best effort, with his shot on the counter attack forcing a good save from Joe Hart with his outstretched leg.

Hugo Rodallega provided Gomez with that through ball; one of 3 chances setup by the Colombian who’s contract is due to expire in the summer. The one-time Steve Bruce signing failed to have a single attempt at goal himself against Manchester City.

After 21 games, Wigan prop up the Premier League table, having scored a league-low 18 goals. Franco di Santo and Jordi Gomez are the club’s joint-top scorers with just 4 goals each this season. Ben Watson has added 3 from the penalty spot, but the lack of goals from forwards Victor Moses (2) and Hugo Rodallega (1) have really hurt the Latics this season.

The sale of Charles N’Zogbia has been a big loss to Wigan this side, with his flair and creativty noticeably missing from the current batch of players.  The Aston Villa midfielder averaged over 3 successful dribbles per game, created 67 chances for his team mates and recorded 5 assists in the Premier League for Wigan last season:

Roberto Martinez’s side are two points from safety and travel to fellow bottom three side Queens Park Rangers on Saturday.
