Manchester City’s march towards another Premier League crown shows no sign of stalling but their closest rival is now more likely to be Liverpool than Arsenal according to bookmakers.
Arsenal remain unbeaten in the league after Sunday’s north London derby but a brace from Son Heung-Min was enough to deny them all three points, leaving The Gunners four points adrift in the chase for what would be their first title since the 2003-04 season.
At the same time, Liverpool were seeing off West Ham 3-1 to extend their unbeaten league run to 17 matches and remain within two points of leaders City.
Betting experts at bookmakers.tv say Liverpool have now leapfrogged Arsenal with leading bookmakers, although Pep Guardiola’s men remain hot favourites at 2/5, equating to a 72% chance of winning the league again in May.
We’ll likely have a far better idea of Liverpool’s title credentials in a fortnight as The Reds prepare for two tricky trips, first to Tottenham and then Brighton. City themselves must go to Arsenal without the suspended Rodri, so there’s a good chance of some big moves in the betting before the next international break.
At the opposite end of the league, Sheffield United’s 8-0 defeat at home to Newcastle was undoubtedly the most eye-catching result of the weekend. The shocking result featured eight different goalscorers and saw them drop below both Burnley and Luton, taking them down to the foot of the table.
Bookmaker reaction has been relatively muted in terms of The Blades’ survival hopes, although Paul Heckingbottom is now heavily odds-on to be the first manager to face the chop. The implication is that they’ll have to pick up points from upcoming trips to West Ham and Fulham, or else the mid-October international break could well prove the moment for a change in stewardship at Bramall Lane.
