England’s Potential Routes to the Euro 2024 Final: Dream Draws and Tough Matchups

Even without a ball having been kicked, supporters are already making guesses about which teams England might face in the Euro 2024 knockout stages.

Many expect England to be one of the main contenders this year. If they win the group stage, they will be just four games away from winning their first European Championship and only the second major prize in their history.

It is yet uncertain who the Three Lions will face after the group stage. Together we’ll try to look at probable possibilities for England’s route to the Euro 2024 final, as well as a brief history of their previous performances.

England’s Euro 2024 Match Fixtures and Schedule

The Euro 2024 tournament promises entertaining matches, and England will be eager to make their imprint on Europe’s grandest stage. Before jumping into the action, let’s have a look at the scheduled matchups:

Group Stage

June 16: England v Serbia

June 17: England v Slovenia

June 20: England v Denmark

Round of 16

June 30: England will face the winner of Group A (1B) or a third-place team from Groups D, E, or F at Dortmund

Possible Scenario If England Win Group C

If everything goes as planned, and the Three Lions win in their group, they’ll face France or Belgium in the semi-finals, followed by a potential clash with Germany, Spain or Portugal in the final.

Possible Scenario If England Finish Runner-Up

England are of course hot favourites to take top spot in Group C. However, if they finish second, they would have to face the winner of Group A. Current predictions suggest this could be a historic match against old rivals Germany.

Should the Three Lions defeat the hosts or any other potential Group A winner, they would then face the winner of Group B, which could be Spain, Italy, or one of the third-place teams from Groups A, D, E, or F.

In the semi-finals, England’s likely opponents are Portugal or the Netherlands. If everything goes as expected, England might then encounter France or Belgium in the final.

England’s agony at the Euros

England have famously not won the Euros, but have twice in recent times come so close. Here, we remember those fateful nights at Wembley.

England v Italy (Euro 2020)

A nation was convinced it was finally coming home, but Italy sadly had other ideas. Luke Shaw gave the hosts a dream start with a goal after two minutes, but England failed to kick on thereafter and allowed Italy back into the game.

Leonardo Bonucci deservedly equalised after 67 minutes, after which neither side created enough to warrant victory in normal and extra-time.

The game drifted towards a penalty shootout, in which Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo all missed to break English hearts.

England v Germany (Euro 1996)

The defining game of a generation, and one that typified England’s fortunes at the Euros. Terry Venables’ side were fantastic throughout the tournament and played beautifully for long periods against the Germans, having charged into an early lead through Alan Shearer’s header.

Stefan Kuntz equalised soon afterwards, but England remained the better side and twice came agonisingly close to scoring a second.

Sadly for the hosts, they could find no way through the game went to penalties, with a certain Gareth Southgate missing the crucial spot-kick.

England v France

France is one of England’s strong rivals. They have always showcased heated matches.

They won the 2018 FIFA World Cup, and in Qatar 2022 quarter-final, England played against France and the game ended when France won 2-1 in a penalty shootout.
