Manchester City’s Phil Foden And Bunny Shaw Win Big At The 2024 PFA Awards

Manchester City players were honored with a great feat on Tuesday night as Phil Foden and Bunny Shaw won the prestigious PFA Player of the Year awards for the 2023-24 season, for the men and women categories respectively.

In the 2023/24 season, Phil Foden had outstanding performances and played a key role in helping Manchester City secure their record-breaking fourth consecutive Premier League title, contributing 19 goals and 8 assists. The 24-year-old English winger’s influence on the team extended beyond just numbers, his creativity, vision, and tactical awareness allowed City to dominate in crucial matches. Across all competitions, he netted 27 goals as City added the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup to their League title achievement. Pep Guardiola’s team also reached the Champions League quarter-finals and the FA Cup final last season.

Foden beat teammate and previous award winner Erling Haaland and other top players like City’s Rodri, Arsenal’s captain Martin Odegaard, Chelsea’s Cole Palmar, and Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins to win the award.

Foden has won 18 trophies with Manchester City since graduating from their academy. He has been named PFA Young Player of the Year twice, winning both awards in the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons. His recent PFA Players’ Player award completes his collection of major individual accolades in English football, which also includes his Football Writers’ Association award and the Premier League Player of the Season award.

In the Women’s division, Jamaican striker Bunny Shaw was recognized as the PFA Women’s Player of the Year after an outstanding season with Manchester City. She scored 21 goals in just 18 games as the top scorer in the WSL last season. Her goal-scoring prowess was crucial in City’s title challenge, though her season was cut short by a foot injury in late April. Shaw became the first City female player to win the award since Lucy Bronze in 2017. Joining her on the list of nominees were her City teammates Yui Hasegawa and Lauren Hemp, as well as Chelsea’s Niamh Charles, Erin Cuthbert, and Lauren James.

Cole Palmer, who had narrowly missed out on the main award, was recognized for his outstanding first season with Chelsea by winning the men’s PFA Young Player of the Year. Following his £40 million transfer from Manchester City last summer, Palmar made a significant impact with 22 goals and 11 assists for the Blues despite joining Mauricio Pochettino’s team late.

Grace Clinton of Manchester United took home the Female PFA Young Player of the Year award after her successful loan spell at Spurs. She scored four goals and made four assists for the North London club, helping them to a sixth-place finish in the WSL and reaching their first-ever FA Cup final. The young English player also made history as the first Spurs Women’s player to win a PFA award since the WSL’s introduction in 2012, further emphasizing the growing competitiveness of women’s football in England.

AL-HILAL PICKS INTEREST IN MANCHESTER CITY DUO

The Summer transfer window remains open till the 30th of August and most teams across Europe are looking to capitalize on the little time they have left to bag up a sustainable team to meet their individual goals for the season. The Saudi Pro League isn’t left out of the bidding, as they keep presenting lucrative offers to lure top talents out of Europe.

Al-Hilal have identified three players in their shortlist to strengthen their defense ahead of their new title challenge this season. Manchester City’s Kyle Walker and João Cancelo as well as Bayern Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong (also a former Man City academy Player) make up this list.

Al-Hilal’s recent move to sign a right-back is a result of Saud Abdulhamid’s potential departure from the Club. His performances for the club have garnered attention from European clubs such as Reims and Roma who have already made an offer for his services. The 25-year-old seems to be interested in making a move to play in Europe triggering Al-Hilal’s need for a replacement. Initially, the Saudi club showed interest in Trent Alexander-Arnold, but the Liverpool right-back showed no interest in joining the Saudi Pro League.

Walker has previously considered a move outside England, having been close to joining Bayern Munich last summer before he renewed his contract with City until 2026. Manchester City have no intention of selling their captain. The English defender joined City from Tottenham in the summer of 2017 and has featured for the Sky Blues 301 times, scoring six times and providing twenty-three assists.

Cancelo, who spent the past season and a half on loan at Bayern Munich and Barcelona, was omitted from City’s squad in their recent win against Chelsea. Guardiola has said Cancelo could rejoin the first team but a transfer may be the preferred solution for all sides.

Manchester City Women lost the WSL title to Chelsea Women with a point separating both teams in the final Matchday last season. They are favorites to clinch the title this season given the several changes in the Blues camp. This includes the departure of Head Coach Emma Hayes to coach the USWNT. City has retained the talents of  Bunny Shaw, Khiara Keating, Lauren Hemp, and Chloe Kelly in a bid to secure the title this season.
