Aston Villa Eye Jean-Philippe Mateta as Unai Emery Weighs Striker Options
Aston Villa’s search for attacking reinforcement appears to be gathering pace, with Jean-Philippe Mateta emerging as a name of genuine interest as the summer window moves into a decisive phase. Credit to Tom Collomosse of the Daily Mail, who has reported that Villa have made an enquiry for the Crystal Palace striker, though there has been no formal offer at this stage.
The timing is significant. Villa’s need for clarity in the centre-forward position has become more pressing amid continuing uncertainty around Ollie Watkins. Saudi Arabian interest has created an obvious layer of doubt, and Unai Emery has been notably open in discussing the situation. As he put it, “We have an issue with him, it’s clear. He is our player. We have had offers for him. I don’t want to sell him but it can change because if it’s a good option for him and the club and I can replace him in the squad, this is the routine we have and we did before with the players who are leaving.
“With Ollie, he is here, for me he is a fantastic striker, we have always believed in him. Now he is our player, there are 10 days more or less to finish the transfer window, we will see what happens, I’m happy with him, if he is staying with us he will continue playing his level. If he leaving it’s because it is good for three ways, one is him, another is the club and another is the team.”

Jean-Philippe Mateta profile suits Villa needs
Mateta fits the description of a striker who could offer Premier League-ready output without needing a long adaptation period. Last season, he made 32 league appearances and scored 12 goals, while also posting strong numbers in the air and providing a consistent physical reference point. He can occupy centre-backs, compete directly, and still threaten space beyond the line, a combination Villa would value if they are reshaping the balance of Emery’s front line.
Villa have already strengthened midfield with the addition of Leon Goretzka, and attention now looks set to turn towards the attack. Mateta’s situation is also one to watch closely. He is in the final year of his Crystal Palace contract, which naturally creates a strategic decision for Palace, even if their current position is firm.
Crystal Palace stance remains firm for now
Collomosse’s update was clear: “New: Aston Villa have enquired about Jean-Philippe Mateta. At this stage, Palace have no interest in selling him. No offer from Villa. Nicolas Jackson remains a key target and informal discussions between parties have taken place #avfc.” That wording matters. An enquiry is a long way from an agreement, and Palace are entitled to hold their ground, particularly given Mateta’s importance in their recent success.
His stock remains strong. A move to AC Milan collapsed earlier in the year after a failed medical, yet he returned fully fit and ended the campaign in impressive fashion. He scored in the Conference League final and remained involved internationally with France, reinforcing the sense that he is operating at a high level.
Transfer window could hinge on Ollie Watkins outcome
From Villa’s perspective, much may depend on Watkins. If he stays, a move for another striker would still make sense in squad-building terms, though perhaps with a different financial ceiling. If he leaves, the urgency changes completely and a more forceful market approach would be expected.
Mateta is not the only name under consideration, with Nicolas Jackson also understood to be a key target, but the Palace forward is clearly on the radar. For now, this is a live situation rather than an advanced negotiation. Villa are exploring, Palace are resisting, and the final days of the window could yet determine whether Jean-Philippe Mateta becomes a serious pursuit or remains one enquiry among several.
Our View
From an Aston Villa fan’s perspective, this report is intriguing because Mateta feels like a very Emery-type option. He has Premier League experience, he gives defenders a real problem physically, and he looks capable of leading the line in matches where Villa need a focal point. There is a practicality to this link that makes sense, especially when the Watkins situation remains unresolved.
The key point is that Villa cannot afford to drift here. If there is a serious chance Watkins leaves, the club need to be ahead of the market rather than reacting late. Mateta would not be a flashy gamble from abroad, he would be a player who already knows the division and has shown he can deliver in big moments. That has value.
There will be supporters who prefer a more explosive signing, and Jackson is the kind of name that will naturally generate excitement. But Mateta offers reliability and presence, and that should not be underestimated. Palace’s stance is understandable, especially given his contract and importance, yet contracts entering the final year always shift the conversation eventually.
If Villa can land a striker who complements the current squad and protects against losing Watkins, that would feel like smart business. Mateta may not be the most glamorous option on the market, but he could be one of the most sensible.
