Arsenal set for injury boost as star’s nears return

William Saliba injury update gives Arsenal hope before key November period

Arsenal have had enough injury noise at the back, so any positive development around William Saliba matters. According to Standard Sport, the France international has now stepped up his recovery from the back problem that has kept him out all season, and the club are targeting a possible return around the November international break.

That timeline remains loose, and that is the correct way to frame it. Back injuries are awkward, recovery is rarely linear, and Arsenal are clearly trying to avoid false deadlines. Saliba returned from the World Cup in the summer carrying what was described as a serious issue. Specialists in London assessed him, surgery was ruled out, and an “extended period” of rest was advised. That alone tells you the club saw this as something to manage carefully rather than force.

Saliba recovery reaches important stage

The significant detail is simple. Saliba was back on the grass on Monday, working through individual drills with two Arsenal coaches away from the main group. That does not mean he is close to starting, but it does mean recovery has moved from passive rest to active build-up.

Mikel Arteta explained it clearly: “Now it’s over a week [on the grass], I think, and he’ll be managing that load,” before adding, “How many repetitions and sessions in a row he can do, but he’s building now his capacity to good standards.” That is the language of a player still in controlled rehab, not one about to be thrown straight into a matchday squad.

Arsenal defence still balancing options

Arteta also made it plain there is no exact return date. “Let’s see in the next few weeks [if] we can start to introduce him with the team, and to see where we are to actually make him available.” Asked if Saliba could return after the next international break, his answer was blunt. “I don’t know, we’re still talking about weeks.” He then added, “That is very difficult to say if he can play just before or after that. It is a very specific healing process and I cannot tell you exactly how he is going to react to it.”

In the meantime, Arsenal have coped. Ezri Konsa has started well alongside Gabriel, while Ben White and Cristhian Mosquera are back from injuries. There are fresh concerns, though, with Piero Hincapie and Martin Zubimendi both dealing with ankle issues and missing the Lille match.

Our View

From an Arsenal perspective, this is the first genuinely calming Saliba update in a while. Not dramatic, not overblown, just sensible progress. Seeing him back on the grass matters because for weeks this situation has felt vague and slightly unsettling. Once you hear “serious back issue”, your mind goes straight to worst-case scenarios.

The encouraging part is that Arsenal seem to be handling this properly. No rush, no chest-beating, no silly promises. Arteta saying “we’re still talking about weeks” may frustrate some fans, but honestly it is better than pretending a return is imminent and then moving the goalposts. The phrase “very specific healing process” says everything. This needs patience.

There is also relief in the fact surgery was avoided. That changes the mood around the whole situation. Saliba is too important to gamble with, especially for a side that wants stability in defence across the season. Gabriel has held things together, Konsa has done well, and White coming back helps, but everyone knows Arsenal are a different proposition when Saliba is fully fit and in rhythm.

So yes, relieved is the word. Not euphoric, because he is still some way off. But relieved that there is visible progress, relieved that the club have a plan, and relieved that this report sounds like recovery rather than setback.
