How Have Sides Fared Against Top and Bottom Half Teams So Far?

This article looks at how well each Premier League team has fared against the teams in the top half and the bottom half of the league this season. We take a look at which teams have taken the most points against the teams in the top half, as well as which teams have scored and conceded the most goals against the teams from the top half of the table and against the teams in the bottom half of the table.

First of all we take a look at which Premier League teams have scored the most goals against teams in the top half of the table this season.

Manchester United have scored 2 goals per game against the teams in the top half of the league this season, which is more than any other Premier League team. Chelsea have scored 1.8 goals per game, Manchester City have scored 1.5 goals per game and Tottenham and Newcastle have scored 1.4 goals per game against the teams in the top half of the table this season.

At the other end of the table QPR have only scored 0.6 goals per game against teams in the top half of the table this season, while Wigan (0.7 goals per game) and Liverpool, Sunderland and Stoke (0.8 goals per game) have all struggled to score goals against teams in the top half.

Next we take a look at which teams have scored the most goals against the teams in the bottom half of the table this season.

Not surprisingly top of the table Manchester United have scored the most goals against the teams from the bottom half of the table this season, as they have averaged 2.9 goals per game. Arsenal have averaged 2.7 goals per game, Liverpool have averaged 2.6 goals per game while Chelsea and Manchester City have both averaged 2.3 goals per game against the teams in the bottom half this season.

Aston Villa have scored the fewest goals against the teams in the bottom half this season, as they have only averaged 0.6 goals per game.  Norwich (0.7 goals per game), QPR (1 goal per game), Newcastle (1 goal per game), Reading (1.1 goals per game) and Stoke (1.1 goals per game) have all struggled to score goals against the teams in the bottom half of the table this season.

Norwich have actually scored 0.6 more goals per game against the teams in the top half of the table than they have against the teams in the bottom half of the table this season, while Newcastle (0.4), Aston Villa (0.4) and Reading (0.2) have all scored more goals per game against the teams in the top half than they have against the teams in the bottom half of the table this season.

Liverpool have the biggest difference in terms of how many goals they have scored against the top and bottom half teams, as they have scored 1.8 more goals per game against the teams in the bottom half than they have against the teams in the top half. Arsenal have scored 1.5 more goals per game against the bottom half teams than they have against the top half teams, while West Ham have scored 1.4 more goals against the bottom half teams.

Although Aston Villa have scored the fewest goals per game against the teams in the bottom half, 68.4% of their goals have come against the top half teams this season. A high percentage of Norwich’s goals (66.7%), Reading’s goals (60.7%) and Newcastle’s goals (60.7%) have come against the teams in the top half of the table this season.

At the other end of the scale only 22.5% of Liverpool’s goals have come against the top half teams this season, while Swansea (29.4%), West Brom (30.3%) and Arsenal (30.4%) have only scored a small percentage of their goals against teams from the top half.
