Allen eyes first team role

Liverpool midfielder Joe Allen has admitted how difficult it is to break into the current Liverpool midfield.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, Allen admits that he is working hard on and off the pitch in an attempt to break into manager Brendan Rodgers first choice midfield. He admitted, “Yes it does get harder and harder to get into the team, but that can only be a good thing.

“That’s something that’s been great this season, the competition for places.

“Stevie’s been playing fantastic in recent weeks but also we were able to cope when he wasn’t in the team. When Luis (Suarez) was missing at the start of the season we coped with that. That’s the difference this season.

“Every player in the squad has really played a part and that’s a great thing to have.”

Since arriving for £15 million pounds shortly after Rodgers took, Allen has endured a frustrating start to his Liverpool career, with injuries disrupting his form and availability.

However, he is now eyeing a return to form and fitness as the reds chase and unlikely first Barclays Premier League Title.

Allen returned to the team on Sunday lunchtime and helped inspire the team to a 4-3 victory over old team Swansea. His impressive cameo role should be enough to see him return to the first X1 for Liverpool’s next game, away at Southampton on Saturday.
