Former Tottenham Manager Tim Sherwood believes that the North London club were unrealistic in their quest for top four qualification to the Champions League, as well as their supposed title challenge following a £100 million splurge after Gareth Bale’s departure. Sherwood believes they had a good season regardless as they finished 6th on 69 points; just three shy of their record 72 tally.
“At the beginning of the season the aim was to be in the top four and it always is for Tottenham,” said Sherwood.
“But when you actually analyse the season, taking out Gareth Bale with 21 goals, Jermain Defoe with 10 Premier League goals, Clint Dempsey with seven and replacing it with a very good goalscorer in Roberto Soldado who has never played in the competition before and six other players who’d never played in the competition before, realistically the expectations of finishing in the top four was far too great.”
Sherwood also highlighted the difficulties he faced as manager after taking over from Andre Villas-Boas, as the club put him in difficult situations by actively looking to replace him before the season drew to a close. Many clubs will look at Spurs structure and take heed from their mistakes with Baldini supposedly having full control over transfers leaving the manager in a difficult situation.
