Having shown he is back to full fitness after his knee injury with two goals in Manchester City’s 4-1 romp at Stoke in their last Premier League match, Sergio Aguero looks ready to cash in against the Newcastle defence on Saturday.

The Argentinian international seems to like facing the Magpies, as he netted in the corresponding match last season – which City won 4-0 – and in the clubs’ first meeting of the season, when he came on as a late substitute to give Manuel Pellegrini a 2-0 win in his first league game in charge of City.

Aguero has also developed a trend for scoring goals in batches, as he grabbed all four in the champions’ 4-1 home drubbing of Tottenham in October and all three in their thrilling 3-2 victory over Bayern Munich in the Champions League in November.

The 26-year-old has become so prolific a goalscorer since his £38million move to the Etihad Stadium from Atletico Madrid in 2011 that he now has the highest goals-per-minute ratio in the history of the Premier League.

The first player to reach 10 Premier League goals this season, a knee injury against Everton in early December slowed down his goal glut, but he is still second in the Premier League chart with 16 and only one behind Chelsea forward Diego Costa.

With that injury now firmly behind him, expect the lethal Argentinian to give the Newcastle back four the runaround this weekend and so boost second-placed City’s title hopes.

While the Magpies are unbeaten in their last three Premier League fixtures, their opponents – Crystal Palace, Stoke and Hull – do not possess an attack with the firepower of City’s, which will be strengthened by the return from the Africa Cup of Nations of Ivory Coast internationals Wilfried Bony and Yaya Toure.

Bony, City’s £28m transfer-window signing from Swansea, may make his debut against Newcastle and so take some of the pressure off Aguero up front.
