Record signing Romelu Lukaku eased Everton’s relegation fears with the only goal in their 1-0 win at Crystal Palace in January, so the £28million striker will be looking forward to facing another lowly club on Sunday, when the Toffees entertain bottom side Leicester.
Nigel Pearson’s team have lost their last four Premier League matches and conceded five goals in their two away defeats in that time – at Arsenal, where they went down 2-1, and at Manchester United, where they were trounced 3-1.
Everton have not been particularly prolific in front of goal recently, scoring only five goals in their last seven matches, but they can improve that record against the Foxes, who have the third worst defensive away record in the Premier League and are now four points adrift at the foot of the table.
Ready to pounce is Lukaku, who now appears to heading back towards the form that brought him 15 goals in 31 league games last season while on loan from Chelsea and so persuaded Everton to splash out that club record fee for him.
After finding the target against West Brom in September, the massive fee appeared to weigh heavily on the 21-year-old, but a change of tactics last month by Everton boss Roberto Martinez, who opted for a more direct approach on occasions, started to bring the best out of Lukaku .
The former Anderlecht forward ended his lean spell with Everton’s equaliser in their FA Cup third-round tie with West Ham in January and he has since scored twice more to take his total for the season to 10.
That tally can rise in front of the Sky cameras as 12th-placed Everton bid to push Leicester another step closer towards an immediate return to the Championship.
